SWELTERING schoolboys will be allowed to wear shorts after The Argus stepped in.

Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) had told pupil Liam Muller he was not allowed to swap his stuffy trousers for shorts during the recent heatwave.

His dad Simon Muller told The Argus how his Year 7 son was threatened with isolation for wearing school PE shorts.

Mr Muller, 34, was furious that part of the uniform, which parents have to pay for, could not be worn during class times, despite temperatures hitting 30C last month.

The Argus printed a story on Wednesday telling of his plight.

That afternoon the family received a text message from the school to inform parents that pupils will be allowed to wear shorts for the remainder of the summer term.

Mr Muller, of Southall Avenue in Moulsecoomb, said: “I’m happy for the kids that I’ve helped make this change, but it should have been common sense and already a policy.

“Some of the classrooms in the building don’t have windows, so it gets extremely hot in there and they were being made to wear trousers in those conditions, which is ridiculous.”

Some boys at the school started wearing skirts to cool themselves down because of the high temperatures in June.

The change has been welcomed by pupils, and Mr Muller is now being hailed as a hero by Liam’s friends.

He said: “The kids are saying to Liam ‘your dad is well cool’ and thanking me for getting the policy changed.”

Liam has been wearing shorts since the change in policy, and father-of-six Mr Muller says the school is now developing suitable shorts for next year’s uniform.

Mr Muller’s eldest son, Caine, was made to wear his blazer last year at the peak of summer - another issue that angered him.

Speaking last week of the policy that meant pupils had to wear trousers rather than shorts, he said: “If it is part of the uniform, why can’t he wear it to keep himself cool? I could understand if the shorts had a Nike tick on or something, but they don’t.”

BACA said in a statement: “Due to the current warm weather, students will be allowed to attend school until the end of the summer term in grey or black smart or tailored shorts that must be worn with school shoes.

“Ties and blazers are not required but students must remain smart with their shirts tucked in. If tailored shorts are not available students may wear their PE shorts, but school shoes are still required - trainers must not be worn.”

The school previously told The Argus that any proposed change to uniform policy would not be put in place until the next academic year.
