THREE teenagers have been released without charge due to a lack of evidence after £1,225 damage was caused to Saltdean Lido.

Youths broke into the recently reopened pool complex on Sunday night shattering a glass panel and took a dip in the pool.

Two boys, aged 16, from Saltdean and Peacehaven and a 15-year-old boy from Saltdean were detained on suspicion of committing criminal damage shortly after the incident was reported at 8.45pm.

Staff managed to get the mess cleared up in time for swimmers and sunbathers to enjoy the venue yesterday.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Three teenagers arrested on suspicion of committing criminal damage at Saltdean Lido on Sunday night have been released without charge due to a lack of evidence to support a prosecution.”

The incident means that the lido, which is now open daily, will have to look into new safety measures that can be taken to try and prevent break-ins.

Rebecca Crook, of Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, said: “There were break-ins throughout the redevelopment period, with people stealing building tools and things like that.

“We will be having meetings this week to discuss safety measures we can take. CCTV is very expensive because it is a huge premises that needs to be covered.”
