BRIGHTON is to get a taste of canine cafe culture later this month when a coffee house hosts the UK’s second Pop-up Pug Café.

Following a successful event in Guildford in May, organiser Anoushka Fernando has decided that July 22 – during the dog days of summer – is the perfect time to bring it to Brighton.

She said: “There is always lots going on in Brighton. It’s such a fun place to be. It seemed the perfect place for it.”

The event will be held at Café Plenty, in New England Road, where there will be a menu specially designed for dogs, including baked treats, snacks and “puguccinos.”

Anoushka said: “It’s a great chance for pugs to socialise with other pugs - make new friends and have a pawsome time.

“For pug owners, it’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded owners and indulge in all things pug.”

However, the day will be more than just pugs and coffee mugs.

She added: “Local artists Finnley Elliott and Matt Murphy will be providing ‘pug pawtraits’ for the café. We also have our regular artist Claire Escourt providing art.

“We have spaces for pug lovers who don’t have a pug themselves but would love to meet some.”

She came up with the idea of a regular meet up in her local area after her beloved pug Bertie missed out on socialising while recovering from a serious operation.

This led to the idea to host a doggy-themed coffee morning, which sold out in just a few hours.

Pugs are enormously popular in Brighton and have exploded in popularity across the UK over the last few years. The number of pugs registered with the Kennel Club has increased by 293 percent since 2007.

This comes as no surprise to Anoushka, who has always been a massive fan of the breed.

She said: “They’re such loving pets. Bertie is just a wonderful animal - full of character.”

There are limited spaces available for the Brighton event which starts at 9am.

Anoushka and partner James Morgan plan to take their pug café to various cities around the UK, with the next one due to be held in London on September 2.
