AN MP has demanded the Home Secretary review a decision to close a police station in a town suffering a crime spree.

Yesterday The Argus reported that Peacehaven residents feel afraid to leave their houses after a spate of vandalism, assaults and incidents of anti-social behaviour.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown, has now insisted that Home Secretary Amber Rudd and Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Katy Bourne review the decision to close the town’s police station in September of last year.

But it seems the newly-elected MP may struggle to achieve his goal: last night the PCC had offered only a meeting with Mr Russell-Moyle and the Home Secretary had not offered any response to the statement.

Mr Russell-Moyle said: “Everyone has the right to feel safe in their homes and communities.

“That is why today I will be writing to the Conservative Home Secretary and Sussex’s police crime commissioner demanding that the closure of the Peacehaven Police Station be reviewed.

“Since this government was elected in 2010 we have lost 550 officers across Sussex, this is clearly become untenable.

“I will also be asking for a meeting with local Police to discuss what plans they have to curb this latest anti-social behaviour with the aim of working with them and the community to develop better strategies.”

In response, Ms Bourne told The Argus: “Last month I wrote to all the newly elected Sussex MPs inviting them to meet with me and discuss policing in their constituencies and I look forward to sitting down with Lloyd Russell-Moyle soon.

“Where there is a particular local issue I do expect community concerns to be addressed by the police and I will be seeking assurances from the Chief Constable - through our regular accountability meetings - that this is happening.”

Home Secretary Amber Rudd MP, who was returned in her Hastings constituency by just 346 votes at last month’s election, did not respond to The Argus’s requests for comment.

Peacehaven has suffered a spate of criminality and anti-social behaviour in the past month.

The windows of the Meridian Centre were smashed in the early hours of Sunday morning.

In June, 63-year-old Derek Bishop had his jaw broken after being taunted and assaulted by a group of teenagers.

Burglars struck the Martlets shop in South Coast Road at the end of the month. Windows were smashed and jewellery was stolen in that incident.

June Burgess, a pensioner who has lived in Peacehaven for eight years, had plant pots stolen from her front garden last week.

Sussex Police district commander for Eastbourne Lewes and Wealden districts Emma Brice said: “We are determined to make policing services effective and efficient and have already implemented a resolution centre to give the public timely advice and support, ensured our investigators are equipped to investigate crimes that cause the greatest harm and prioritised our response to emergency calls for help.

“We work to keep people safe across Sussex and while we have dedicated teams working within communities they do not work alone in achieving that.”
