BUSINESSES are backing plans for new platforms and flyover bridges to allow more Brighton trains.

Unblocking bottlenecks at East Croydon station could release up to eight new trains an hour on the Brighton Main Line and help to secure 13,000 new jobs by 2025, according to a report published today by former ministers Steve Norris and Tessa Jowell and commissioned by the Gatwick Growth Board.

The report recommends the station is redesigned to create two new platforms with flyovers to untangle Windmill Bridge Junction where routes to London Bridge and London Victoria divide.

The report’s authors warn that without these changes, both bottlenecks will prevent the full capacity on the BML being realised and have urged land is secured for the project before they are snapped up by developers.
