POLICE will carry out another internal investigation into how it handled the killings of two women.

Sussex Police has this afternoon confirmed it will review its original investigations into the deaths of Susan Nicholson and Caroline Devlin.

The force found neither of the deaths in 2006 and 2011 suspicious. But last week Robert Trigg was jailed for life for Ms Nicholson’s murder and Ms Devlin’s manslaughter.

Assistant Chief Constable Laurence Taylor said a review of the investigations and how subsequent complaints were handled.

He has also asked West Sussex County Council to carry out an independent review on how public bodies worked together over the incidents.

He said they would be “robust” and “probing”, adding: “The force will act on any key findings and, in our commitment to be open, we will publish those of the internal reviews after sharing with the families.

“I am truly sorry it has taken this long to get justice and it is important that we learn any lessons and provide answers for the families of Caroline and Susan.”

The news comes as The Argus yesterday revealed the force three times investigated its officers in the six years following Ms Nicholson’s death but found no fault in how their inquiries had been conducted.
