THERE was a guard of honour as crowds turned out for the funeral of a much-loved police officer.

More than 100 friends and family were there to remember PC Roy Warren, who was found dead at home in Bexhill on July 2.

The 50-year-old, who was only 18 months from retirement, had developed a blood clot in his lung.

Fellow officers joined Chief Constable Giles York at the funeral at St St Augustine’s in St Augustine’s Close, Bexhill.

They formed a guard of honour as the hearse arrived at the church.

A lone piper played as the coffin arrived.

Dozens of members of the Hastings-based 1066 motorcycling chapter also turned out to pay their respects to the motorbike enthusiast.

They followed the hearse in convoy back through Bexhill after the funeral.

The group’s assistant director Melissa Tuttle remembered PC Warren’s “dry, sardonic humour” and said he was “taken too soon”.

The members are planning a memorial ride from the Lewes store of his favourite model, the Harley Davidson, August 19.

Tributes have continued to pour in for the “heroic, loyal and humble” police officer who leaves parents Arthur, 80, and Kathleen, 79, of St Leonards, sister Jules, 48, and four-year-old nephew Archie, of Loxwood, and his adored cat Aslan.

Jules said he left a “massive hole” in their lives and he was a loving brother and humble police officer.

Friend John Alexander said it was a “tragic loss of a great copper”, adding: “He was very popular.

“I even had the ‘privilege’ of being stopped for doing 35mph in 30 limit by him with his hand-held meter.

“People are gobsmacked at his death at such a young age.”

A book of condolence is open at Bexhill police station in Terminus Road on weekdays between 10am and 2pm or 3pm and 6pm.

PC Warren started his policing career in Brighton and was well known in the force across the county.

Nicknamed Bunny due to his surname, he has been described as a stalwart member of Bexhill’s neighbourhood police team.

He spent a number of years as a road traffic officer and made it his mission to crack down on speeding.
