Chris Hughton rued a 70th lapse as Albion made a losing start to Premier League life.
The Seagulls boss felt his side limited Manchester City’s chances in the first 70 minutes.
But a Sergio Aguero strike after the hosts lost possession sent them heading to defeat.
Hughton praised the home supporters and said: “I think the players gave them a lot. I think the players for those 70 minutes did as much they could.
“It’s very difficult against a top class side like Man City with the players they have got and the quality they have got.
“We were still very much in the game and had really limited them to a few chances.
“That moment in the 70th minute, when we allowed ourselves to be stretched, was the only moment until then that they capitalised on.
“We know against these teams that chances are going to minimal.
“You have to make the most of those chances and hang on or make sure you do well enough to not concede.”
