THIEVES broke into a town’s historic gardens to steal donations made by visitors.

The incident happened at Highdown Gardens in Worthing earlier this month.

Head gardener Gary Prescod said someone had climbed the fence and cut the industrial padlocks off the donations pillar box.

When the gardens were donated to Worthing Borough Council in 1968 it was on the basis they would remain a free resource for the people of the town.

However public donations do help to maintain the quality of the gardens through the purchase of seeds, plants and bulbs.

He said: “I’m grateful to anyone who donates a small amount to allow us to continue the good work.

“Having the donations stolen is a kick in the teeth, but I empty the pillar box regularly so the impact is limited.”

Highdown is receiving fewer donations which is believed to be down to more people counting the pennies.

However the gardens are continuing to have increased numbers of visitors, particularly during the school holidays.

Mr Prescod said: “If you enjoy visiting Highdown and want to help us keep it looking good, do consider putting in a few coins as a donation when you visit.

“For my part, I promise to empty the pillar box daily so you know your money is going to fund the gardens rather than something more dubious.”
