A MURAL of late, legendary musicians on the side of a pub is being reworked with 14 new faces.

The side of the Prince Albert pub in Trafalgar Street, Brighton, was painted with images of 28 famous musicians in the summer of 2013.

This replaced a mural of former BBC Radio One DJ John Peel which was unveiled nine years earlier.

The faces currently being added by local street artist Req include Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, Chester Bennington of the band Linkin Park, who died in July, David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen and George Michael.

The stars will enhance the old mural, which is also being reworked and which features the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse, Freddy Mercury and many more.

Req, who has been spray painting since 1984, said: “When David Bowie died it was decided we have to include him.

“Some of the paint was peeling due to sun damage.

“But we can now rework it and resize some of the original faces to fit more in.

“It should take around three weeks to complete.

“We took around four weeks originally when it was both me and SinnaOne working together.

“I have some girls who I teach as part of my spray painting academy who are helping do some of the base layers.

“I will then add in all the detail to finish each face.

“I used to paint pop stars and advertise album releases with paintings so it is something I am well known for doing.

“The pub’s owner Chris Steward chose the stars he wanted to add and then we came together to start finding pictures and planning the mural.

“I love doing it and can actually do a face quite quickly.

“To paint a beautiful thing is more my type of art.

“The paint does sort of crack after a while but it lasts quite well.

“We are putting a layer of lacquer on to it when it is finished so it should last a long time.”

Staff at the pub said they get a lot of tourists taking an interest in the mural and trying to spot famous faces as they walk past.

The wall was previously known for its Banksy Kissing Coppers, which was later removed and sold.

The Prince Albert’s owner Mr Steward said: “Students have messaged me after seeing the work being done and asking for the mural not to be blanked out.

“A lot of the people who stop and look are very young and can’t come in the pub but it is good to see that a lot of tourists and students love to come and see it.

“Photo realism is great.”
