A deal is close to being finalised which could end a dispute between Southern and the train drivers' union Aslef.
A statement published on Aslef's website said talks had been held between the union and Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), Southern's parent company.
It said: "Further discussions between Aslef and GTR have taken place today and significant progress has been made.
"We are now in the process of finalising a proposal for agreement."
Southern has been in dispute with Aslef and the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union over plans to introduce driver only trains.
A previous deal agreed between Aslef and GTR was rejected by members.
Industrial action by Aslef has included strikes and an overtime ban.
RMT members are striking on October 3 and 5.
