POLICE are investigating the devastating fire which destroyed 19 coaches as a possible arson attack.

Investigations are still at an early stage into the fire at the Ace Travel depot across the road from the road of the Upper Beeding Cement Works site at about 2am on Sunday.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Police said in a statement yesterday that “arson has not been ruled out.”

The Argus told yesterday how families in Steyning Road, woke to the sound of explosions as bus fuel tanks blew up.

The fire service said last night: “At 2.29am on Sunday, crews were called to buses on fire at Upper Beeding Cement Works.

“On arrival, a number coaches were well alight and there were several loud explosions, believed to be fuel tanks splitting.

“This caused burning fuel to run under adjacent vehicles, which meant that the fire rapidly spread to a neighbouring workshop and cabin.

“Firefighters and local contractors managed to move six buses, including two heritage coaches used for specialist events, and prevented the vehicles from getting damaged.

“An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway, but the possibility of arson has not been ruled out. If you may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or have other information concerning the fire, then please contact police online.”

The coaches destroyed were owned by Ace Travel. A spokesman for the company said they were co-operating with the investigation.

As well as the buses two portacabins were destroyed along with a workshop.

Police said yesterday they are working closely with the fire service to discover the cause.

Detective Sergeant Christine Holyoake said: “We are interested to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or who may have other information concerning the fire. Anyone with information should call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 198 of 24/09. Or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
