A MUCH-LOVED mural has finally been revealed following its renovation.

Scaffolding surrounding the mural on the side of the Prince Albert pub in Trafalgar Street, Brighton, was taken down earlier this week after being up for over a month.

The mural had undergone essential work as paint was starting to flake off.

Owner Chris Steward said: “When we first started scraping at the wall the paint just fell off. Johnny Cash at the top is still the same, but that’s the only thing that survived – it’s completely changed.”

The mural has been a highlight of Brighton’s street art scene since it featured a lone tribute to BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel following his death in 2004.

Since then, it has grown to include 42 legendary musicians, first expanding in the summer of 2013 when local street artists Req and SinnaOne painted 28 faces on the wall.

Req, who completed this year’s mural alone, said: “I used to paint pop stars and advertise album releases with paintings so it is something I am well known for doing. I’ve loved painting this mural.”

The mural was meant to be finished in three weeks, however its completion date was delayed following the death of Tom Petty.

The new mural features the additions of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, Chester Bennington of the band Linkin Park, David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen and George Michael – as well as an updated Captain Beefheart.
