TWO Varndean College stars won a competition held as part of the Lewes Short Film Festival.

Budding filmmakers competed to create the best short film shot in a 24-hour period which was launched this month at Lewes’s new Depot Cinema.

Filmmakers were invited to shoot and edit a three-minute film in one day using specific locations and an allocated prop.

A-Level Film Studies student Jules Stockwell and assistant crew member Will Palmer were the winners.

The finished piece of work could be a drama, documentary or an experimental piece shot on either the Straight 8 app or on a camera of the students’ choice.

Each film could have a crew of no more than two people.

The shortlisted films were then shown at the All Saints Centre in Lewes.

Judges were Jerry Rothwell (How To Change the World, The Town Of Runners, Donor Unknown), BAFTA winning animation director Steve Smith, artist filmmaker Abigail Norris and film studies tutor and filmmaker Anthony Gates.

The winning prize of £100, which was donated by the Brighton Film School, was presented to the students on Sunday.

Varndean College runs a number of film and media-related courses.
