A FORMER police boss has been nominated for an Argus Community Stars Award.

Assistant Chief Constable Nev Kemp was previously the divisional commander for Brighton and Hove.

He has been put forward for the Beyond The Call Of Duty Award sponsored by Tilley’s Stonemasons.

ACC Kemp has been recognised for his work supporting gay and transgender rights.

In January, while still at Sussex Police, he was named as LGBT charity Stonewall’s senior champion in its annual workplace equality index.

It was the sixth time in eight years Sussex Police appeared in a top 100 of gay-friendly employers and the Sussex Police LGBT Network was highly commended for its work.

ACC Kemp was given the Stonewall award for his work as the LGBT equality champion for the force – a responsibility he took on alongside his daily task of leading policing in the city.

Part of his work included supporting Brighton Pride and the annual equality walk.

ACC Kemp stepped down from his post in December 2016 and joined the Surrey force in May.

Speaking last year he said: “In policing we value courage and it is courage that many LGBT people have had to show just to be themselves.

“Making a stand as champion bought me into conflict on a personal level with a member of my family and sometimes the public and so I am sadly aware of the prejudice and discrimination LGBT people have experienced.”

The awards will be held in the Brighton Dome Concert Hall in January.
