The Argus’s Chippy of the Year has been decided after more than 2,000 of our readers voted it their favourite.

The Broadwater Fryer won the award after it was pitted against nearly 50 other popular fish and chip restaurants in Sussex.

It saw off competition from nine other shortlisted entries.

Madan Suman and his wife Gita Devi, owners of the restaurant in Broadwater Road, Worthing, hope winning the award will bring more customers through the door.

Mr Suman, 50, said: “It is absolutely brilliant for us to have won the award.

“Now people will want to come to the restaurant more which is always a bonus for us.

“It is great to know that people appreciate how hard we all work here.

“We have had a lot of attention on Facebook since the award was announced.

“People have already commented wishing us well and to say well done.

“The restaurant is family run which is what gives it a good atmosphere and makes it stand out.

“It is just amazing to win the award.”

The restaurant serves an mix of dishes, including the traditional range of fish – cod, haddock, plaice and huss – as well as pies, burgers, fried chicken and even samosas and spring rolls.

It also offers customers a taste of its “Worthing famous potato dog”.

Mr Suman said that he wants to introduce other British dishes alongside the classic options and that offering a range of sizes and prices has helped to attract a variety of customers.

He said: “We use fresh ingredients and work hard every day.

“The restaurant is just getting better and better.

“We never get complaints and have a good online review record which also helps.

“We have something for everyone and offer a range of gluten free dishes.

“I am also supported by the local community and we support groups in the area.

“We do a lot with our local football. cricket, bowls and cheerleading club, not only providing finance and sponsorship but offering food at costs to help them at fundraising events and keep these important community organisations going.”

Voting for the competition opened on October 16 and forms were printed in our newspapers titles and on our website until October 20.

Andy Parkes, group managing editor at The Argus, said: “They do the best chips I have ever tasted. It was a pleasure to walk into a place that was spotless and had the best customer service I have had.

“If you want a business to work you have to have the perfect product and top notch customer service and this place has got that.”
