A MAN has been taken to hospital after being rescued from a house fire that left the bottom floor of the property destroyed.

Fire crews were called to tackle the fire that broke out in Boston Road in Haywards Heath at around 4.15pm yesterday.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters helped one person to get out of the home, who was then taken to hospital by paramedics.

The ground floor of the terraced property was destroyed in the blaze and the upper floor was left with heat and smoke damage.

It was later confirmed the fire was started accidentally.

Four crews from Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill were called to the scene.

They used breathing apparatus, three jets and two hose reels to tackle the fire, with the last fire engine leaving the scene shortly after 8pm.
