THE Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex Peter Field attended a special ceremony to award British Empire Medals on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen to four volunteers.

Beatrice Evelyn Frost received the award for services to UK National Heritage. She campaigned and fund raised over £1m to restore and bring Windmill Hill windmill into public ownership.

Mary Holman’s services to the community were recognised. She was clerk to Ditchling Parish Council of Ditchling for more than 37 years, and for part of that time clerk to Hurstpierpoint as well,

Amanda Jane Scales’ reward was for services to adult learning and skills. She came to education late as a single parent but after gaining a degree and qualifying as a teacher she went on to develop courses and resources to support disengaged learners.

Ruth Tomkins’s award is for charitable services to people with dementia and their carers. Having spent many years raising funds for Dementia UK to increase awareness and fund an Admiral Nurse for Dementia sufferers in East Sussex the model Ruth developed has now been taken up throughout the UK in areas where there is no access to Admiral Nurses.
