ALBION striker Glenn Murray and his wife have been arrested in connection with an alleged £1.1 million tax fraud.

Murray and his wife Stacey are under investigation by HMRC and they were arrested on Tuesday morning.

Their house was searched and HMRC officers seized computers and other items.

Both Murray, 34, and his wife were arrested on suspicion of evading income tax and VAT and cheating the public revenue.

A spokesman for HMRC said: “A husband and wife have been arrested as part of an HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigation into a suspected £1.1 million tax fraud.

“HMRC officers arrested the man and woman at a residential property in Brighton yesterday morning (Tuesday).

“The man was arrested on suspicion of evading income tax and VAT, and cheating the public revenue.

“The woman was arrested on suspicion of evading income tax, and cheating the public revenue.

“The property was searched by HMRC investigators. Computers and business and personal records were seized during the operation.

“The couple were interviewed by HMRC and have both been released under investigation.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

The star striker is Albion’s leading goalscorer this season, having scored seven times.

Murray is in his second spell with the Seagulls, having originally played for the club under Gus Poyet between 2008 and 2011.

He helped Albion achieve promotion to the Championship in 2011, but signed for arch rivals Crystal Palace in the summer on a free transfer.

Murray then moved to Reading on loan before signing for Bournemouth, where he plied his trade in the Premier League.

A move along the coast and back to the blue and white of Albion was on the cards once again, though, as boss Chris Hughton signed him on loan last season before signing a permanent deal in January.

Fan favourite Murray helped the Seagulls clinch promotion to the top flight, hitting a double-figure goal tally to help secure second place in the Championship.

Earlier this month he bagged a late winner to knock former club Palace out of the FA Cup at the Amex stadium.

The Argus contacted Albion for a comment, but the club declined.
