FANS of Lionel Ritchie will be Dancing On The Ceiling after the American singer announced a gig in Hove.

The 68 year-old will perform at the 1st Central County Ground on Saturday, June 23, with tickets on sale from 10am this Friday.

It is his first ever visit to Sussex.

Lionel said he was looking to build on his popularity in the UK having played to a packed crowd at Glastonhury Festival and three nights at London’s 02 Arena in 2015.

His song Hello has become something of a cult hit among British youth in recent years.

Lionel said: “I’ve been missing the UK and can’t wait to make my long-awaited return and see parts of the country I’ve never made it out to before.

“The fans are always incredible and they make the atmosphere at every show electric, so I look forward to singing along with them soon."

The singer will perform a career-spanning set in Hove, drawing from songs written during his time in funk band The Commodores and his wealth of solo hits including Lady, Truly, Say You Say Me and All Night Long.

Lionel has sold over 100 million albums and recently joined the judging panel on television talent show American Idol.

Chief executive of Sussex Cricket Rob Andrew said the concert would be one of the year's standout events.

He said: "We can’t wait to host Lionel and his fans for what will unquestionably be one of the highlights of the summer.

"The fact that a global superstar like Lionel has chosen us for his first ever visit to Sussex demonstrates how highly regarded The 1st Central County Ground is as a concert venue.”

As well as winning five Grammy Awards, Lionel received the Songwriters Hall of Fame's highest honour in 2016, the Johnny Mercer Award.

The singer was born in Alabama.

He was baptised and grew up as an Episcopalian, at one point considering becoming a priest instead of embarking on a career in music.

He has three children from two marriages – one of whom, Nicola, is adopted.
