Martin Braithwaite admits his return to France is motivated by his desire to play in this summer’s World Cup.

The Denmark striker joined Middlesbrough from Toulouse in the summer but made a deadline-day return to Ligue 1 when he joined Bordeaux on loan.

Gus Poyet’s side will have the option to buy Braithwaite permanently in the summer for 7million euros (£6.1m) but the player’s focus is on international matters.

He said at his unveiling on Thursday, broadcast on his new club’s website: “I am happy to be back in France.

“I started well at Boro but there was a change of coach (Tony Pulis replacing Garry Monk) and a lot of things changed.

“The World Cup is coming up and the next six months are important.”

Braithwaite is conscious that his decision to join Les Girondins could upset supporters of their rivals Toulouse, with whom he reached double figures for goals in back-to-back seasons before his move to England.

“I understand if the Toulouse supporters are disappointed but I gave everything for the club,” he said. “They are good memories.

“If people hate me because I play for Bordeaux, I cannot do anything about it.”
