After the Boaty McBoatface saga, you would have thought allowing the public to name a new development would be out the question.

But that is exactly what developers behind a new office-apartment complex are doing in Hove.

Britannia House in Kingsway, near Hove Lagoon, is set for a new name when the office block and 15 flats are unveiled.

But when developers asked residents for ideas, the suggestions were very reminiscent of when the public voted in an online poll voted for Boaty McBoatface to be the name of the British Antarctic Survey’s new polar research vessel.

Hove’s own legendary DJ Norman Cook, who owns the Big Beach Cafe at Hove Lagoon, inspired the suggestion of Fatboy Slim Heights.

Another entry offered Trump Plaza after the world’s most diplomatic politician.

Or maybe Titanic, named after the famous sinking ship.

Ward councillor Robert Nemeth said he had received over hundred entries, after working with the developer Chris Weatherstone to ask the community for suggestions.

He said: “I worked quite closely with the developer through the planning process talking about how residents felt about the building and he has been very receptive throughout to what the community has had to say and this is just an extension of the process.

“My personal favourite is Fatboy Slim House but in reality I like Hove Lagoon House because the development is next to Hove Lagoon and is the premier seafront attraction, and it should be promoted at every opportunity.

“We have had over a hundred suggestions, which is phenomenal.”

Unfortunately the powers that be will decide the final name and not the public, and it is very unlikely Fatboy Slim will make the grade.

Some of the more sensible suggestions are Kingsway Heights and Seaview House.

Developer Mr Weatherstone said: “We have been struggling for a name, and we said we would give £250 to a charity of their choice for anybody that comes up with a good name.

“There have been some quite amusing names thrown forward. Estate agent Mishon Mackay, Cllr Nemeth and I will choose the name over the next couple of weeks.”

Whatever it will be called, the former office block will be home to an architecture practice on the ground floor with 15 one, two and three bedroom flats above for rent and sale, with balcony views overlooking the sea.
