A POPULAR car boot sale is to return to school grounds after the previous organisers left the site over an argument over the ‘high rent.’

Carden School Market and Car Boot Sale will take over the school fields at Carden Primary School in Patcham.

It comes after dozens of angry residents posted their dismay on social media after the previous boot sales organisers, who had been at the site for more than ten years, fell out with the school in February over school bosses increasing rent.

The man behind the new boot sale said residents have a lot to look forward to when it returns to the County Oak Avenue school.

Shop owner George Denyer, 54, said: “We want to make this boot sale better than it was before.

“I think you have to make your own luck.

“If you stand still you get overtaken.

“With a little of hard work between the main traders and myself, I think we can make it a success.”

Mr Denyer has run greetings card and gift shop Georges Gems in Boundary Road, Hove, for 12 years.

He said residents can expect weekly re-occurring pitches including a food van, bouncy castle and slide and fruit and veg stall, alongside small Brighton and Hove businesses looking for a new market for their products plus the traditional car boot items.

The previous car boot Carden School Car Boot closed in February after a spat with the school.

Owner Mark Bartholomew said in 2013 the rent increased by £40 to £480 per month, before rising again to £492 last September.

He said with increasing advertising and insurance costs, the rent had become unbearable.

He said last month: “The way I look at it now the school is going to get 100 per cent of nothing, whereas if we had come to an agreement it could have been different.”

But since then the school had been lining up a replacement from a pool of interested parties.

A Carden Primary School spokeswoman said:”The school is really pleased that the Carden Market will open in May.

“We are really looking forward to seeing this very important part of our community thriving once again.”
