I MUST disagree with two letters on Thursday.

First Martin Fish’s attack on the bus lane enforcement cameras, which should prove useful.

The £500,000 is a government grant, and so it is not being paid for by local ratepayers. The delays in the Lewes Road that Martin complains about are caused by changes to the Vogue Gyratory to create a safe cycling route (nothing to do with the bus lanes).

Incidentally buses are also delayed by this. Hopefully there will not be an enforcement camera near Tongdean Lane, because that may also discourage motorists turning right to use the Park and Ride site.

If drivers use a bus instead, everyone gains.

On to Valley Gardens (and to Chris Todd’s letter), I believe the interviewer had every right to ask about the highly damaging Valley Gardens scheme. Although it was basically created before Warren Morgan’s tenure, it is likely to be the scheme his council is remembered for. The delays in the scheme’s introduction will be minor compared to the likely disruption caused to buses and other traffic.

Chris Todd suggests traffic reduction is the only solution; but deliberately inducing traffic congestion not only increases pollution; the resulting unreliability problems and higher costs/fares - undermine bus services.

While cycling and walking should be encouraged, this should not be at the expense of arguably the main alternative to the car. We could have had the best of both worlds.
