A mothers-only street dance crew has returned triumphant from an international competition.

Mums Da Word is made up of 19 women from Brighton and Hove.

They travelled to Kalkar in Germany last weekend to compete in the United Dance Organisation European Street Dance Championships – and came first in the parent category.

Mums Da Word choreographer and street dancer Monique Matthews, 22, from Mile Oak, said: “Three years ago when we started, the mums weren’t sure if they could do it, but look at them now.”

Andria Rudy, who joined in September, was inspired to take part after watching her daughter dance.

She said: “I used to dance professionally as a teenager, but hadn’t danced in 20 years before joining the other mums.

“But I felt I was getting old and unfit while my daughter was doing such amazing things.

“Dancing is such a great feeling.”

Sarah Riddles, who has been dancing with the group for the three years since itformed, said: “Being a member of Mums Da Word means everything to me.

“We entered the parent category and wanted to show the judges exactly what we could do.

“They seemed impressed at our military, slick performance and some of the judges leapt off their seats.

“We had the whole room dancing and cheering.

“Winning the European Championships was like winning the Olympics.

“Regardless of your age, it’s just a number.

“Being with 18 strong, independent women and dancing is a great feeling and I love my fellow mums dearly.”

Mrs Riddles’ son Ryan, 12, also competed at the European Street Dance Championships.

His crew, Defiance, won in the under-14 advanced category.

They were taught by choreographer Munya Bbr Muchati.

Mr Muchati said, “I’m so proud that I can inspire kids to do what they love to the best of their ability.

“Their final performance had people in tears and this is why I love what I do.”

Mrs Riddles added: “Like mother like son, Defiance won too.

“I could not be any more proud than I am. It has been an emotional weekend.”
