THE comments made by Carola Godman Irvine that came to light yesterday will not help bring us together as a society.

She is the chairwoman and president of the Lewes Conservatives and is therefore in a position to help people feel part of – and not detached – from their communities.

The aim of the terrorists Mrs Godman spoke about soon after the Manchester Arena bombing is to divide our strong community, which is made up of people from all races and religions.

If we use language that separates Islamists from the rest of the community that may serve to make people from some ethnic backgrounds feel isolated.

Twenty two innocent people lost their lives in an appalling act of hatred at the Ariana Grande concert last May.

In heartbreaking times like that it is difficult to uncover any silver lining but, fortunately, the good outweighs the bad in this world and after that utter tragedy we saw some incredible bravery and generosity.

The Manchester Evening News newspaper raised more than £1 million within 24 hours for the families of the victims, superstars including Grande herself sang their hearts out at the One Love concert to continue that fundraising.

We need more people with that kind of mindset, who see the light in the darkest of times, if we are to ever progress as a society.

What we do not need is anything that divides our society. If we let that happen then we let the terrorists win.

We need to work together to progress as a society and paint a picture that we are all as one.
