TWO PCs have been given written warnings after using “excessive force” to deal with a drunken yob.
PC Steven Morris and PC David Quayle faced gross misconduct hearings by a panel at the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
They had arrested a man in Steyning High Street and were taking him to custody in Worthing.
But they believed the suspect was spitting at them and kicking the seats in the car, so they decided to get him out and restrain him until a police van could arrive.
The panel decided that the behaviour did amount to misconduct, but was not gross misconduct.
PC Morris used excessive force in pulling the arrested man out of the back of the police car and restraining him on the ground.
PC Quayle was found to have used excessive force in using spray similar to pepper spray on the arrested man.
Both officers have been given written warnings, and were found to have breched standards of professional behaviour.
