A PHYSICS teacher running a reusable coffee cup campaign has launched window stickers after recruiting more than 180 cafes.

The scheme encourages cafes to offer a discount to customers using a reusable cup. Peter Golton, who teaches at BHASVIC, noticed large amount of discarded disposable cups when running through Brighton and Hove.

He said: “There’s a big problem with plastic waste and it’s become something that people really talk about but it seemed like an insurmountable problem for one person to solve. So I just wanted to do one thing that could help.

“I decided to focus on a smaller area of Brighton to begin with so I’m targeting Seven Dials. I’m hoping to get stickers in all cafes in the area by this weekend.”

About two thirds of the UK’s plastic waste is from packaging and it is predicted that the amount of plastic waste will rise to 6.3 million tonnes by 2030.

Mr Golton encouraged people to do their bit to reduce this figure, drawing attention to the new Scandinavian trend of plogging. He said: “Plogging basically means picking up litter as you run.

“If you’re going to go running and see a piece of litter, why not pick it up and put it in the nearest bin? I don’t think I’d have enough hands to pick up everything because there’s so much mess around. I specifically pick up disposable cups, tweet a picture of what I’ve found, and this really enforces why I’m running this campaign.”

To find out more and support the campaign, follow the BYO Coffee Cup page on Twitter or Facebook. The stickers are now present in Seven Dials cafes including Small Batch Coffee Roasters, Latina Deli, Ground Coffee House, Le Gourmet Deli and The Flour Pot Bakery. They can also be found around Brighton at Cafe Trafe, The Boys’ Cafe and Curiosity Kitchen amongst others.
