Brighton and Hove City Council has confirmed Hove Lagoon paddling pool will re-open by the end of the week.

The facility was closed last week due to a micro-bacteriological test failure and for repairs to the rubber crumb surface.

Parents were frustrated over the council’s lack of information on when the pool will re-open, and why the pool was closed at the height of the summer holidays.

A spokesman said: “The repairs have been completed and we are currently re-testing the water.

“We hope to re-open the pool by the end of the week.

“We test and check the pools and play fountains regularly.

“Sometimes during the season they will need to close for maintenance or cleaning.

“When a pool or fountain is closed there will be signs around the pool and we’ll keep you updated on social media.”

On Sunday, parents spoke to The Argus of their disappointment of the pool being shut.

Mother-of-two Chelsea Chapman, 30, from Worthing, said: “We are extremely disappointed the paddling pool was closed.

“We came specially for the pool and it completely threw us off. I wanted my children, especially Isabelle who is two, to enjoy the pool.

“It’s suitable for toddlers. We could go to the seafront but it’s daunting for toddlers because the sea is big and the seafront is busy.

“The council had weeks before the school holidays to clean the pool.

“Since they had built it for kids, they should get it ready in time.

“We’re very disappointed. I think the council should tell us when they will reopen the pool. There’s no indication at all.”

Her sister Rhianna Chapman, 32, said: “Last Sunday I came with my son Leon and it was opened.

“Leon wanted to come back this week but we didn’t realise it was closed.

“The council should know it’s summer holidays. When we have such lovely weather a lot of parents will bring their kids here.

“The council should have had enough time to clean out the chemicals. Parents are very annoyed and we don’t even know when we can access the pool.

“They should prioritise the kids first.”

Barbara Zeman, 42, of Poplar Avenue, Hangleton, said: “It would be nice if the pool was opened. It’s very frustrating. My son and I have used the pool for quite a while.

“He is water crazy so we are very disappointed. I first notice the pool was empty last month, and it was empty again on Saturday. I thought the council should have sorted out everything before the holidays.”

Andy Tomkinson, 43, of Carlisle Road, Hove, said: “We had plans to use the pool yesterday. It’s a shame that it’s closed. Not sure if it could have been avoided but the council should have planned ahead rather than picking the holiday season to clean it."
