Homebase is to announce the closure of up to 80 stores putting jobs at Hove, Lewes, Horsham and Eastbourne stores at risk.

The 250-store retailer chain is yet to confirm a list of stores affected, leaving an unsure future for the Sussex branches.

Around 1,000 jobs are set to be lost in total after the lossmaking DIY chain was bought be restructuring company, Hilco.

Homebase has already shut 17 unprofitable stores and cut 300 jobs at its head office at Milton Keynes and horticultural buying office in Swindon.

Chief executive Damian McGloughlin said: "We have not taken this decision lightly, but decisive action is required to start rebuilding Homebase's position in the UK market.

"We will be providing as much support as we can to help those affected through this difficult time."

Hannah Maundrell, Editor in Chief of money.co.uk said: “It’s undoubtedly distressing news for employees of Homebase and their families, especially those who are yet to find out their fate.

"Homebase staff have been left in limbo after many jobs have already been cut this year.

"Those who fear they could lose their jobs should hope for the best but prepare for the worst."
