THERE is stupidity and then there is gross stupidity and those who continue to dice with death on the cliffs along our coastline certainly belong in the latter category.

What is it going to take for so-called thrill-seekers to get the message?

Sooner or later someone is going to get killed, which is completely avoidable.

Yet again, The Argus is publishing pictures of people sitting dangerously close to the edge of the cliffs at Beachy Head, quite literally dicing with death.

It was only a matter of weeks ago that there was a major cliff collapse at Birling Gap, not far from Beachy Head, yet still the message is not getting through.

The signs along the cliffs spell out the dangers but some people are clearly not taking a blind bit of notice.

There have been “selfies” posted on social media of people taking the most incredible risks and in one instance a few months back two adults, accompanied by two young children, were pictured just a few feet from the cliff edge.

The Coastguard is hugely concerned by the risks being taken by people who clearly should know better yet continue to ignore expert advice.

As a spokesman said: “There is no safe place to be “close to the edge of the cliffs)”.

It is a fact of life that social media plays a key role in society and “being noticed” and “liked” is deemed important, particularly by teenagers and young adults for whom self-obsession is hitting new heights.

The rights or wrongs of that is a completely separate issue, but risking everything for the sake of a selfie is not only rash but stupid. Stay away.
