A WOMAN was rushed to hospital last night after becoming stuck between rocks at Rottingdean

It is believed she may have been there for two hours

Onlookers applauded the emergency services as they released her and carried her to a waiting ambulance on a stretcher

The woman, believed to be called Holly, was conscious but screaming in pain – it is believed her back was injured.

One onlooker said it was clearly a very difficult and delicate situation.

He said: “It would appear the woman slipped between the two large rocks while walking.

“The rocks can be tricky to negotiate and there are deep gaps between them. They can be dangerous.”

Another witness said: “It seemed the woman had slipped though somebody had said earlier she may have jumped.

“It was very moving to see onlookers who had gathered and to see them all applaud the 999 crews.

“They did a great job but they always do “I think they must have saved her life.”

Ambulances, fire crews, the Coastguard and lifeguards were all at the scene.

The fire brigade technical rescue unit was also there.

The woman was freed at about 7.30pm.

A witness said: “It was amazing watching the lady being put on to the stretcher “We were about 50 yards from the scene but you could see the care they were having to take when they moved her.

“She was right out at the end of the rocks.”

A member of the fire brigade confirmed the woman had been stuck from the waist down between the two rocks.

He asked anyone going too close to step back.

The woman, who is thought to be in her forties, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
