A "feisty" woman who came close to winning a Parliamentary seat in Brighton has turned her back on the Conservative Party.

Judith Symes, who appeared on Tory leader David Cameron's A-list of approved candidates, said she had lost faith in the party and was now a Labour supporter.

Her shock defection will come as a huge embarrassment to the Tories, who had trumpeted Ms Symes as one of a new generation of women candidates.

When Ms Symes, a management consultant, stood for election in Brighton Kemptown in 2005 she came within 2,700 votes of unseating Labour's Des Turner.

Her campaign was taken so seriously by the Conservatives that Sandra Howard, wife of then party leader Michael Howard, was dispatched to the constituency to lend her support.

At the time Mrs Howard, a former model, told The Argus that Ms Symes was one of the party's many "fantastic" women candidates.

She added: "They're feisty and young and in the 21st Century - and they're not dressed in Tory pearls."

Ms Symes, 43, told The Argus about her decision to defect at Labour's annual conference in Bournemouth.

She said: "The Conservatives badly needed reform and David Cameron presented himself as the reformer but he is not succeeding.

"He has not gathered together a cross-section of society. Instead, elitism and exclusivity are at the heart of the party."

Explaining her new-found fondness for Labour, she said: "We have had ten years of record investment in public services and the highest employment ever, as well as a new prime minister who was the most competent chancellor, creating stability and a growing economy.

"I see the positive changes and the great opportunities available to more people of all backgrounds - and I want to work to keep the Labour party in government."

Her pledge of support was welcomed by Labour's prospective candidate for Kemptown, former Brighton and Hove City Councillor Simon Burgess, who said: "I thought she was a reasonable Tory when she stood and I'm glad she's coming across."

Ms Symes's defection suggests Prime Minister Gordon Brown's strategy of reaching out to supporters from other parties is reaping rewards.

Today, in a sign of Labour's growing confidence, Warren Morgan, the party's chief whip on Brighton and Hove City Council, offered Conservative members and councillors an "open invitation" to switch to Labour.

Are you a Tory voter considering to switch your vote to Labour? Tell us below.

Another Tory defector. Good to see that I'm not the only person who thinks Cameron is a total waste of space...which is the main reason why, under Cameron, the Tories will not get into power...which is great for us Labour voters...I'll just wait for the Tory backlash!!!

It seems that she has also left the Labour annual conference!

why are we so surprised at all these defections i mean surely its a case of one party fits all as I can't tell wot seperates the 2 major parties

Well put Jayson. The Labour party are simply Tories. What is the difference?

People are fed up of this sharade and want proper representation. The working class have been abandoned by Labour at their own peril.

Just another typical politician only out for what they can get for themselves. I expect it's nowt to do with policies just that Labour are a better bet to get her snout in the trough.

No change here then. They are all interchangeable self-important non-entities who want to rule our lives and make us all miserable. In this day and age we need less government not more.

Sue, Hove says...

She doesn't care which party she represents - she just wants all the perks from being an MP - costs of second home paid, all expenses paid no receipts needed so she defects to the party she thinks will win the next election. Another self seeking MP.

"I want to work to keep the Labour party in government"

How on earth can she say this when she was a Conservative supporter a few months ago? Does she have any principles?

James, Brighton says...

Ms appears to have noted recent polls and has decided to jump ship for her own sake.I agree there is little difference between the parties now however to join a party she must have critisied many times indicates she is not someone to rely on.

if she thinks she has a real chance of joining the gravy train she will join the lib dems next month.

I'm a former Labour voter who will 'defect' to the Tories next time. My reason? Labour pledged a referendum before signing Britain up to the new EU constitution. Now they've broken that promise. Cameron is offering us a vote. Brown isn't.

I imagine she's been promised something by Gordon Brown. He'd rather reward people from other parties (even Thatcher) than those who have years of loyal Labour Party membreship

Must be a pretty unsophisticated "management consultant"if she can't see what a disaster "new labour" has been.Never mind, we'll all find out soon enough.N/Rock was just the start and bad luck if you lost your pension or you're a farmer.

Well, it's plain to see that Judith Symes is a woman of principle! Anyone who votes for such a shameless pursuer of power in the coming years needs their head examining.

Sadly, I agree. Cameron seems to be a lot of hot air but at least he's offering a democratic vote on the EU constitution.
Brown promised a referendum - and it was in the Labour manifesto. To say no now is such a huge breach of trust I can never believe anything else he says. He may sell himself as different to Blair but on this issue, we're learning the truth.
We may not take to the streets about it, but don't doubt our resentment.

Dear Tory activist
You can't have much confidence in your Leader then as Judith was on the A list of candidates!
Welcome to our Party Judith

Those people saying that the are not going to vote labour over the referendum are either deluded or being purposely stupid. Labour promised a referendum on the Euro constitution. The Euro constitution was ditched, so why would the government have an expensive poll just to satisfy a few europhobe. We are part of Europe for good or ill. We will not be leaving and to be honest the party that entrenched us most into Europe has actually been the Tories not Labour. Maggie T signed the Single European Act and Major the Maastricht Treaty. Hardly the work of eurosceptic. Tory supporters who imagine that the tory party will ditch Europe should get their heads examined.

Terry, Worthing says...

David Sham-eron is just that a complete and utter sham. Even my Conservative friends know he will lose the next election whenever it is called. Ms Symes is wise to jump from this sinking Conservative ship. The Conservatives are out of touch and out of power. Long may that be the case. I also agree with Teirnan she is right about the Conservatives and Europe. The talk one way (negative) and act the other (positive) towards the European Union. Hypocrites.

Roger Parkes, Tunbridge Wells says...

Judith was a beneficiary of the Cameron modernisation project and the drive to have more women in parliament. She has no loyalty to any party only to herself and her desire to become an MP.

How can one expect any loyalty from someone that has been married three times. I pity the people that she will be representing ha ha. What a joke!
