If Marcus Brigstocke tried to follow the old cliche "anything but politics or religion", he'd be in serious trouble.

For a start, he'd have to rewrite his entire act. The Radio 4 star positively thrived on confronting delicate taboos.

In a powerfully angry performance he directed his ire at climate change deniers, George Bush and US foreign policy, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, all other religions, Robert Kilroy-Silk and Euro Disney, to name but a few.

His fury at the mentality of the Daily Express and Daily Mail and their readers bubbled out majestically in a diatribe of disbelief at a neighbour whose argument against immigration was "what about when they rape your wife?".

He drew laughs throughout but this show was as much an expression of Brigstocke's personal political beliefs, met with acknowledgement from the audience, as it was about comedy.
