More than three thousand people descended on Horsham's Atspeed Stadium to witness the home team beat Maidenhead United 4-1.

The atmosphere in and around the ground before the game was electric as Horsham attempted to go through to the second round of the FA cup for the first time in their 126-year history.

Horsham, of the Ryman Premier League, are the lowest ranked team from Sussex in the competition and the ground was near bursting for the historic occasion.

James Bird, 23, of Tunbridge Park, Horsham, said before the game he believed that Maidenhead's current poor form would prove to be an advantage to the Hornets.

He said: "The atmosphere is great around town. There are more scarves than I've seen ever I think.

"I'll say it's going to be 2-1 to Horsham."

Steve Chafter, 23, also of Tunbridge Park, Horsham, agreed.

He said: "It's going to be quite an exciting match. Horsham's form is looking good so it should be a good match to watch.

"We'll definitely go through to the next round."

The game got off to a slow start for the home team before the Hornets scored first , much to the delight of the packed out ground.

The team doubled their tally in the second half before conceeding a penalty to Maidenhead to make it 2-1.

The atmosphere was tense until Horsham scored a further two to romp home to victory.

The crowd went into a frenzy at the final whistle as they invaded the pitch to congratulate their heroes for a well earned win and passage through to the next round.

Supporter David Hempstead, 48, said: "For the average fan this is fantastic.

"Usually the ground has about 500 people watching. To see it here today full was fantastic and the fans saw something worth watching. Hopefully they'll keep coming back."
