THE Argus followed up its story about the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner’s investigation of me with another about me not commenting on the investigation when I had previously argued for transparency.
I would like to make it clear that while I had argued in the House of Commons for transparency, I and a handful of other MPs lost the argument.
The House overwhelmingly voted for the identity of MPs under investigation to be kept confidential.
I am therefore following the rules set by Parliament.
Whether I agree with them is irrelevant.
Those are the rules, and I regret that others have chosen to breach them.
I regret too that The Argus chose to include a quote in your story which is false.
The original reporting in November made clear the fundraiser which is under investigation was not for my personal gain.
I will of course comment as soon as the investigation is complete.
