A £100,000 bid to tackle accident blackspots where 50 children have been injured in the past five years has been given the go-ahead.

Councillors in Brighton and Hove have backed the plan which will transform the roads around schools in Elm Grove, Brighton.

Elm Grove Primary School, Elm Grove, Fairlight Primary School, St Leonards Road, and St Martin's, Hartington Road, will all benefit from the scheme.

During the five year period between July 2002 and June 2007, 48 accidents were recorded in the area, resulting in 50 children suffering serious or slight injuries.

Fifteen of these happened when they were on the walk to or from school.

Georgia Wrighton, Councillor for Hanover and Elm Grove, said: "This is very welcome and it is very important for us to encourage children to walk or cycle to school.

"We need a zero tolerance of parking around school."

The three schools cater for nearly 1,000 pupils and in a survey of parents, the measures were backed.

Bollards will be put up at the corner of Hartington Road and Lewes Road and a 20mph speed bump along Hartington Road.

On Lewes Road, before the junction with Hartington Road, the pedestrian crossing will be moved south.

A one-way system and double yellow lines will be placed around Fairlight Primary School and "keep clear" markings repainted.

Hastings Road will be modified with build-outs at the front entrance of the school and a rail installed at the junction with St Leonards Road.

Near Elm Grove Primary, the Wellington Street Junction will be tackled by installing build-outs and bollards to stop cars parking.

Bollards will be installed at the junctions between Cobden Road, Luther Street, Bentham Road, Carlyle Road, Arnold Road and Bonchurch Road.

The scheme has been given the go-ahead by councillors on the city council's environment committee.

A wider consultation will now be held with neighbours and the emergency services.
