Boozy students will be able to know when to call time on their binge-drinking thanks to a new mobile phone alcohol unit calculator.

Aimed at students and launched as part of drink company Diageo's 'Know What's In It' campaign, the calculator will tell the inebriated user how many units they have had in a session by tallying up the different drinks the person has sunk.

The campaign, which is in its third year, seeks to promote unit awareness by highlighting the different levels of alcohol in different brands. It is being run in conjunction with the National Union of Students and will run in 15 student unions across the UK during November.

Beer mats and posters will also be appearing in bars to promote the campaign to highlight the fact that one drink does not always translate as one unit of alcohol.

The Department of Health recommends that guidelines is three to four units per day for men and two to three units per day for women.

A pint of Stella, for example, is three units while a large double Jack Daniels 2.8 units.

Kate Blakeley, head of social responsibility for Diageo, said: "The positive feedback we continue to receive from students has encouraged us to run the activity again this academic year. Young adults are often criticised for their attitudes to responsible drinking, and with Christmas approaching, it's an important time to give them information on how to make responsible choices about alcohol.

"While we would encourage everyone to enjoy their celebrations, it is important that if they are drinking alcohol beverages, they do so responsibly."

For the first time this year the campaign is also being expanded to non-student union bars. Company Zelgrain will be featuring the campaign in its Brighton pubs such as Riki Tik, Bond Street, and the Mash Tun, Church Street.

Operations manager Dan Hills said: "The ten sites the campaign will be featured at are the ones we consider will have the most impact with students.

"The idea is to make sure that we are providing people with the relevant information so they can still enjoy themselves but understand what they are drinking.

"We are certainly not saying that people are drinking too much but they should be aware of how much they are drinking."

Ama Uzowuru, from the NUS, said: "We promote responsible drinking amongst the student body and welcome this innovative campaigning method. It makes a change from the usual poster campaigns that have little impact due to poster blindness.

"Giving the information directly to students will allow them to think before they drink and still have a great time while drinking sensibly."

Students can text 'units' to 81066 and in return will receive a text message with a website link. Clicking on the link will direct them to the calculator and students can then insert the name of a drink to see how many alcohol units it contains.

The initial text costs 12p with the link message delivered to your mobile costing 25p.

Internet charges to use the calculator will apply so check with your mobile phone provider for more details.
