The city of Brighton and Hove has a diverse range of entertainment but it is lacking the mainstream variety shows that Eastbourne and Worthing enjoy.
Ken Dodd, for instance, visited both those towns twice this year but has not appeared on stage in Brighton since 2003. Mickey Rooney toured Britain recently but missed out Brighton for Worthing.
I can't believe there is no demand for shows like these in our city. I think it is because there are no venues known for this sort of entertainment. Eastbourne has its Royal Hippodrome, ideal for variety, and Worthing its Connaught Theatre.
The Max Miller Appreciation Society would like to change all that. It has invited London's famous Brick Lane Music Hall to bring a top-rated variety show to the city at the Old Market in Western Road, Hove, at 3pm on Sunday, November 18.
If there is a demand, there will be more shows like it. If not, Brightonians, I'm afraid, will continue to have to travel to Worthing or Eastbourne.
