It's a journey I, like thousands of other motorists, have come to dread.

It's the Monday morning A27 crawl to work via the Beddingham roundabout.

For years it has been the cause of frustration, despair and anger as we have inched forward mile after mile until reaching the sanctuary of the dual carriageway after Lewes.

So it was with what I freely admit was a great deal of anticipation that I prepared for yesterday's journey, buoyed by the news that the flyover across the railway line had been opened.

But what difference would it make and would it live up to expectations? The answers, in short, were quite considerable and yes.

Traffic flowed almost to the roundabout and then continued, slowly I admit, to the new roundabout layout at Lewes where we joined the dual carriageway as normal.

To many this may appear inconsequential because it's only a stretch of road we are talking about.

But the 30,000 people who daily use that stretch know its significance.

We are almost a club, brought together by disbelief that our needs have been so neglected that journeys could take twice as long as they should - and all because of the dreaded Beddingham roundabout that has entered motoring folklore as a place to avoid.

Much work still needs to be done and the delays seemed just as bad for those travelling east but if yesterday is anything to go by the essential improvements have been completed.

At last we can dream.
