A fire raged overnight in the grounds of a hospital.

More than 40 firefighters from around the county were called to the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath after more than a dozen people called 999 at around 6.30pm yesterday.

No one was hurt but nearly three quarters of disused social club the Norman Hay Community Hall, in Lewes Road, Haywards Heath, was destroyed.

Fire crews were still putting out the last of the flames and making the area safe this morning.

Arson has not been ruled out.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "When we arrived the building was already well alight and it was pretty huge but we soon established there was no one inside.

"The incident did not affect the hospital or any of its work."

The 50-year-old hall, in the grounds of the Princess Royal Hospital, is owned by Sussex Partnership NHS Trust and has been earmarked for demolition.

It has stood empty since 2004 but was previously used by community groups, including the WRVS Meals on Wheels service.

The cause is being investigated.
