PASSENGERS had to be evacuated after a fire broke out in a train carriage.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) were called to reports of a train carriage fire between Falmer and Lewes at 10.46 last night.

18 people were evacuated to the rear of the train by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS).

Southern Rail cancelled all trains between Brighton and Lewes.

Crews from Brighton, Lewes, Burgess Hill and Shoreham were in attendance.

One lane of the A27 Westbound between Falmer and Lewes was closed.

A spokesman for Southern Rail said: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Brighton and Lewes.

"At the moment, trains are unable to run on this route."

A spokesman for ESFRS said: “At 22.46 we were called to reports of a train carriage fire between Falmer & Lewes. Crews from Brighton, Lewes, Burgess Hill and Shoreham

"West Sussex Fire have safely evacuated 18 passengers to the rear of the train.

"One lane of the A27 Westbound between Falmer & Lewes is closed.”
