Firefighters were called to a hotel after a blaze broke out in a staff locker room.
Crews from Brighton were called to the Metropole, in King's Road, at about 11.30pm yesterday.
The blaze began in a bin in the staff locker room. Firefighters believe it may have been caused by a discarded cigarette.
The bin was completely destroyed but security staff at the hotel managed to douse the flames before fire crews arrived.
The fire was contained in the locker room and the hotel was not evacuated.
Hotel bosses have launched an investigation to ascertain whether anyone was smoking inside the building, which is illegal following the introduction of a national ban on smoking in public places last year.
