A schoolgirl has been cautioned by police after she let off a pepper spray canister at a college.

The 18-year-old, from Langley Green, Crawley, was arrested yesterday after the incident at Central Sussex College in Crawley, for a public order offence.

She and four other students were today suspended by the college pending an investigation.

Students and staff had to be evacuated after the gas was sprayed inside the college's library at 4pm on Tuesday.

A female teacher who was in the library with a class was taken to Crawley Walk In Centre for a check up after suffering breathing difficulties. She was later discharged.

A spokeswoman for the college said: "At this stage we are going through the formal disciplinary process and we are still in the middle of the investigation.

"Five students have been suspended. At the moment there is a strong feeling that a number of these are innocent parties."
