In her letter of January 26, Rose Collis misinterpreted my letter about her forthcoming lecture on gay playwright Joe Orton (Letters, January 26).
She is indeed an eminent scholar of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history, and I apologise for not explicitly saying so. My dismay was aimed entirely at Brighton and Hove City Council for failing to promote the event as part of LGBT History Month, in February. As far as I can tell, the council has no plans to celebrate this major event at all.
As usual, the voluntary sector is putting the council to shame with a wealth of LGBT events in Winter Pride Week (www.brightonpride.org.uk).
I stand by my assertion that the council's closeted publicity was a missed opportunity to engage a wider audience, especially younger LGBT people. I am delighted they have since added it to the online calendar at www.lgbthistorymonth.org.uk.
