As part of the World Wetlands Day celebrations, RSPB Pulborough Brooks is offering free entry to its nature trail, as well as offering a free guided walk from 2pm-3.30pm to show visitors why the reserve is so important for local wetland birds and wildlife.

There will be no need to book - just go along and join in.

Located on the River Arun flood plain north of Chichester, Pulborough Brooks' birdlife is so rich that it has been given the highest level of international protection available.

Its flooded meadows are currently teeming with wild ducks, geese and swans, many having flown in from Scandinavia and Siberia, attracted by the food and security the reserve offers.

A mere 20 years ago, the flood plain was dry, having been drained for intensive farming. The work to restore the wetlands has been a triumph for the RSPB and Pulborough Brooks is now the society's most-visited reserve in the South.

Visitors can walk from the visitor centre to viewing areas and hides which overlook the wetlands. Explorer backpacks for children and families are available for free loan.

There is also a play area, a well-stocked shop and a tearoom with a reputation for fine cakes.

The centre is on the A283 between Pulborough and Storrington.

  • Free, visitor centre open 9.30am-5pm daily, nature trail open from sunrise to sunset. Call 01798 875851.
