Firefighters had to stop off at a takeaway restaurant after the grill caught fire.
It was thought the grill had been overloaded with briquettes at El Houna in Western Road, Hove.
The alarm was raised by passers-by as plumes of smoke poured out of the restaurant's air vents.
Two crews from Preston Circus and Hove arrived at about 11am today and doused the grill with water until it was made safe.
The restaurant remained closed for several hours for staff to clear up the kitchen.
