In his letter to The Argus (January 31), John Stanaway incorrectly suggested that the rail link between Brighton and West Brompton via Gatwick may be closed at the end of this year.

This is certainly not the case.

I believe Mr Stanaway is referring to the Brighton to Watford Junction service which, as part of the Brighton Main Line Route Utilisation Strategy has been identified for withdrawal in December this year.

It must be made clear, that even after this service has been withdrawn there will still be a link between West Brompton and Gatwick and Brighton.

Passengers from the north of London will still be able to make the journey to Gatwick and Brighton, although as part of the current proposal this will involve changing trains at Clapham Junction.

Another positive point that Mr Stanaway did not feel able to raise in his letter is that Southern will be operating Gatwick Express train services from June of this year.

From December we will then be running extended Gatwick Express services to and from Brighton in the morning and evening high peak period.

Clearly, this is good news for Brighton and Hove.
