A working men's club could have its licence revoked following a string of complaints of excessively loud music.

The alcohol licence for Roselands Men's Club in Seaside, Eastbourne, will be reviewed on Wednesday by Eastbourne Borough Council's licensing committee.

It follows complaints from Joy Blaber, who lives nearby and had sound monitoring equipment fitted in her home.

She said excessive noise late into the night prevented her from sleeping and watching television, and expressed concerns about loutish behaviour outside her house.

According to council papers 'the objectives of the prevention of public nuisance and public safety are not being met'.

Mrs Blaber said: "Loud band music and disco music is played excessively loud from the club, to such a degree that I am unable to listen to my television, go to bed and actually sleep.

"I work shifts and have come home to what can only be described as a night club in my living room."

She said the anxiety of knowing bands were booked had affected her quality of life and that it was 'most distressing'.

She also said she was reluctant to have her grandchildren to the house for fear of them treading in broken grass in her front garden.

Mrs Blaber added: "The club was served notice as it was felt to be causing a public nuisance. Noise continued to be excessive despite assurance it would be kept under control.

"In addition to noise, my family and I have had to contend with offensive language, unsociable behaviour, smoking and broken glass around my property."

In November Mrs Blaber wrote to the council with a list of times and dates the noise had been too much following the installation of sound monitoring equipment in her house.

Eastbourne Borough Council has requested either all forms of regulated entertainment be removed from the licence or that the building be soundproofed.

Licensee Richard Over was unavailable for comment.
