As a member of the planning committee, I am unable to make a comment on the merits or otherwise of demolishing the old Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital (Letters, January 31).

However, I was surprised by Geoff Fitch of Ringmer's remark that residents should be more concerned about the hideous and unsafe obelisk being proposed for the middle of the Seven Dials roundabout.

The Argus article (January 14) showed mock-ups of the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty, which I cannot believe anyone would take seriously.

Firstly, I would like to know if Mr Fitch has seen any designs yet, as he calls them hideous.

Secondly, whatever is chosen for this site will obviously not restrict vision for drivers. That would be madness.

Roger Amerena, chair of the Montpelier and Clifton Hill Association, is hoping for a monument to the memory of Amon Henry Wilds, who built many of the houses in the area during the Regency period.

I would like to make it clear that residents will not be paying for this monument. Several local businesses have already agreed to make donations.

The monument at the Seven Dials has nothing to do with the redevelopment of the hospital.
